Family Violence Social Action

On Friday after morning tea, our Social Studies class headed down to Tippet park to prepare for the Family Violence march around Glen Innes shopping centre. We were the first to arrive then later on, other organisations joined us waiting for the march to start. Some of the organisations were SHINE, Te Aroha, Police Officers and more. As we were waiting, my social studies class and myself gave out white ribbons to those who arrived and asked people to sign big white ribbons. Then at 12:00pm, everyone was ready to march. All the men and boys stood in the front holding the banner that we created, this was to show that men are also promoting this message and by doing this, its affective. We marched around GI yelling different kinds of chants like “FAMILY VIOLENCE!.. IS NOT OK!” or “HONOUR THE WOMEN!... IN OUR LIVES!” while the police officers stop cars and let us cross streets safely. Ozzy and Kieren called and we responded. Along the way, Beyonce and I handed out white ribbons to those who were nearby and watched us march by delivering our message.

Our march stopped once we reached the middle of the town center. All men who were apart of the march joined the stage to have the opportunity to talk about their experience and what they have taken from the message. These men were great examples of men who should be taking good care of their families. Women were invited on the stage too and had their say as well. When most of the speakers were done, Beyonce and I walked into stores all around the middle shopping center giving out white ribbons and promoting the message. It was really good to see and hear shopkeepers and public people look interesting and asking question about our promotion. It was really good to see a lot of people taking part of our social action… including people who were interested in accepting the ribbons along with our explanation about our promotion. I was really happy to see most of our student leaders for 2019 turn up and support us although they were on student leave.

It was nearly 2:00pm in the afternoon, everyone started to leave so we started to pack up. We collected the signed big ribbons and put down the barbecue and tents. We were all starving by then because we didn’t have lunch and were too busy with our roles so some of us put our money together and bought pizzas for lunch. Miss Robertson was really kind to buy drinks and hot chips. It was a really good way of ending off our day.

One of the positive things from the social action, is being able to see people in the community standing and watching our march. They smiled while we walked past and I believe this was a good thing. It's a sign that they have an idea of what we are doing and also agree with the message we are promoting. Another positive thing from Friday's social action was seeing many people (especially men) from different organisation participating in the march. People who also believed in the same thing as our year 11 SOS class did. But something I didn't like about our social action was when I gave white ribbons out and promoting the message and some people didn't accept it. But I knew something like this will happen because many people have their own points of view about every message.

From the social action that we prepared for and took part of, I never had any regrets of becoming a part of this action. In year 9, 10 and starting year 11 now, I have learnt a lot about social action and really wanted to be part of one. Well, I have now! It was a such great experience for myself because I have also learnt a lot about the message and about social action by being part of it. I felt happy to march alongside with people who believed in the same thing as I did about family violence. To also see how effective the community was when they saw our march and our promotion. Something that I think I could’ve done better with, was getting to know people from other groups more and why they were there. They must have had different reasons to why they turned up and participate in the march. Besides from that, I think that my Social studies class did an awesome job on the day, we approached people using our school RISE values and I think we represented Tamaki College great! It was a great way of starting my year 11 social studies!

Social Responsibility - Jed-i Dodgeball

What level of social responsibility were you during our dodge-ball lesson and why?
Level 3: Because throughout the game of Jed-i dodge-ball, I showed respect to my teacher, team mates as well as my opponents. I showed honesty when I got hit by sitting down and getting ready to be saved by my Jed-i. We had a reliever but we still managed ourselves throughout the lesson.

What could you do in order to improve your level of social responsibility for the next lesson?
Apply to all of the exhibits of level 3 and work on level 4 so that I can challenge myself to keep achieving. Part of level 4 I would want to work on and apply to is asking and providing assistance to the teacher and other students.

What was a highlight of your holiday?
Sleep until I wake up in the afternoon. Staying home.

What are you going to do to make sure you get the most out of the last term of school for 2018?
Keep attending all my classes for the last 8 weeks. Make every learning count so that I can be more successful in my classes next year in year 11 and also making sure I'm organised.

Social Responsibility PE

What is Social Responsibility?
Social Responsibility in Physical Education would be managing myself such as my actions, my time management and turning up with the right gear.

What level were you during our lesson and why?
During the game lape (samoan softball), I would grade myself level 4 because I apply to all level 3 exhibits. I am always willing to work with others although I don't know them too well. I compliment and encourage others and include those who aren't too comfortable or feel left out. When I feel like I'm not giving all my effort, I ask others and teacher what they think and take in their advice to help me improve.

What could you do in order to improve your level of Social Responsibility for next lesson?
Something I could do to improve my level would be.... try and lead the team to success in an activity. Try to use my skills out of physical education and see what happens. Trying new ideas.

Do you have any questions about your learning you still need answered? Yes
How does the world outside of physical education apply to Social Responsibility?
Why is Social Responsibility so important in and out of physical education?
How can Social Responsibility help me with my career when I leave school?

The Dark Side of Chocolate

Today in Social Studies, we watched a documentary called "The Dark Side of Chocolate". This documentary was about investigators who were eager to find out the truth behind the sweetness of chocolate. They travelled all around Africa which is the country where most cocoa are developed from.

They hid camera's so that people who are working for the cocoa company's don't get suspicious of them. The main thing that they wanted to find out was if their was child labour happening behind the development of chocolate. As their investigation went along, they happened to find out about child labour happening. This was the main issue in the documentary. Many children were being trafficked by people who were part of cocoa development companies. Children from ages 12 - 16 are being transported from town and into farming places where cocoa are being grown. The main place where these children are transported to is located in Ivory Coast in Africa. These children doesn't go school or have the freedom to live with their families. If they try to escape from the farming areas, they are beaten.

This action is effecting the children, their health and their process of development. The reason why this is happening is because the companies are eager to keep their job running to gain money from the world. So they use children to gather cocoa's from the farm and export the cocoa to their companies for them to sell.

Some companies mentioned in the video were nestle, kitkat and many other chocolate factories. The CEO of nestle was interviewed, he was asked about child labour and trafficking and his perspective was it's not a problem. This indicates that he doesn't care for the health and freedom of the children who are suffering behind making chocolate. He's so much of a business man.

I think that this action of child labour happening behind making chocolate is very shocking and sad. Everyone including myself is enjoying the taste of chocolate but doesn't know the truth behind chocolate. I believe that these children should have the rights to freedom and to live life normally and happily. Have the rights to go to school and be educated instead of being treated as a slave and working for something that's not worth their time.

All about my Significant place

Today in Social Studies, we were to write about our significant place with 3 reasons why. Like I said before on my other significant blog post, my significant place is my village in Samoa; Lauli'i.

The place that is significant to me is .... My village in Samoa - Lauli’i because … it is the place where my genealogy birthed. It is the place where my ancestors were born and were raised up, coming down to my parents as well as myself and my older siblings. This significant place of mine is the place where my identity started and thrived since I was born until I moved to NZ in 2005. It provided myself food, especially cultivation food from our family plantation. Lauli’i provided fresh water…. Provided shelter where I lay as a child and warmth from the sun. Most of all my village gave me love that I now give to others as well as the knowledge that they passed down to me that I now use. Although I haven’t been back but I still remember everything that this place has done for myself and my ancestors. This is why Lauli’i is my significant village because it was where my life started as a young child experiencing life.

Above is a paragraph I wrote myself about my significant place and why. Below are my 3 reasons about this significant place of mine.

Aesthetic:
Aesthetic means beautiful. I believe that Lauli'i is the most beautiful part of Samoa. The lush green branches and the blue, clean waterfall within the village. The houses that are built in the village are also beautiful surrounded by beautiful colours of the flowers that decorates the presence.

Historical:
One historical moment that I never forget is having this place as my birth place. Aswell as my ancestors. It is the place where my ancestors were born and raised up to be who they are as well as myself until I reached 3 years of age when I had to leave. But this place is history. Many magical things has happened at this place. Wars, celebrations, birth and much more.

Cultural:
Lauli'i is a cultural place. People in this village has shown cultural values aswell as our very own village values. Like loving each other, when they need help... a hand is lent by neighbours. Showing hospitality to visitors from overseas. These values are being shown by the people in the village and it defines cultural is cherished and sustained in the village.

Will Smith's Well Being

Describe what is happening in the video with links to Will Smith’s well-being:

Emotional/Mental well-being:
Uncle Phil awarded Will Smith with a season ticket to the clippers for his impressive behaviour lately. Will was very happy with the award he had received. But then he knew that he didn't deserve it because he was hiding something he had been hiding that was unacceptable to his family and for his health. Will immediately was emotional because he had to confess something that Uncle Phil wouldn't expect from him.

Spiritual well-being:
Uncle Phil wanted to award Will with his achievements from school. He wanted to save the tickets for Will's graduation but he was too happy with Will's recent achievements so he awarded it early but it turned out that Will didn't deserve it.

Social well-being:
Will Smith lived with is Uncle's family who cared about him, especially his health. Will was surrounded with people who loved him who treated him as their own son or brother. When Will told his family that he's been taking pills, his family reacted with disappointment and surprise because they cared for Will and his health. When they saw Will was sorry for what he did, they forgave him.

Physical well-being:
Will told his family that some boys at his school gave him pills for him to take in order for him to be awake. Uncle Phil and his family weren't happy with Will's choices of keeping pills because it'll affect his health. It could also affect his actions on the basketball courts.

Explain what positively or negatively affected Will Smith’s well-being:
Will was very fortunate to have a family who cared about his well-being. But Will made wrong decisions off keeping his health well. He accepted pills from students at his school because he thought that the pills would help him keep awake at his basketball training and games but he didn't know that the pills could do so much more. Affecting his health. He told Uncle Phil about what he had done after he was awarded for his achievements, and Uncle Phil got mad at Will because his actions was unacceptable. Taking in things that weren't good for his health and his sons health too.

My Significant Place: Samoa: Lauli'i

Today in Social Studies, we learnt about the meaning of significant. I learnt that significant means importance and noteworthy. We had to write about a place that is significant to us. Below is a paragraph of mine about my significant place. My village in Samoa: Lauli'i.

Students protesting in America

Students sit in silence as they rally in front of the White House in Washington, D.C., March 14, 2018. Student walked out of school to protest gun violence in the biggest demonstration yet of the student activism that has emerged in response to last month's shooting at Florida's Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Photo by: AP Photo/Carolyn Kaster

There was an article that I read today on Newsela, it was about students in America out on the streets protesting during school hours. Thousands of students protested on gun violence in school ours, a threat to them. They wanted the lawmakers to change the law of gun allowance in schools because it threats them in their classrooms. Although the students were out on the streets protesting during their school hours, I think that they did the right thing for themselves. To open up to the public and the country about what they have in mind about the gun violence in their school grounds. That this law might be affecting their learning. I strongly agree with these students who protested as their social action because  it can be one of the solutions to their problems. The lawmakers should change the law of allowing guns in school grounds because they never know what is going on the minds of the students, that it may be the reason why they aren't doing good in school. Or the reason to why they don't want to attend school but who knows? With the students protesting, I think that they are calling out for help to hear them out.

Coconut Cookies

Today in food technology, our class baked coconut cookies. As always my cooking partner was Lydia. I found today's cooking session easy because we were able to follow the instructions that were written on the board without hesitating to ask the teacher.

I believe that we did good in everything that we did. We managed to finish cooking early. I don't think that we did anything wrong baking the recipe, we mixed the right amount of ingredients and heated the oven on the right temperature. Next time we cook chocolate muffins, I would most likely to do the same thing that we did today. But slightly improving more with our skills and knowledge towards our cooking. I enjoyed cooking coconut cookies.

2018 Polyfest

This year I joined our schools Samoan Group 2018. It’s actually my second year experiencing Polyfest and a lot of comparison has occurred between my first and second years. But it’s a good thing that joined this year’s group, I met new people, especially people from different cultures. It was one of my highlights to see other students from other cultures trying out the Samoan group. Although it was hard to catch on to the language and the actions, I think they did a good job achieving it. As for myself, I was glad to learn new values of my culture as a Samoan. This years experience went by so fast that I can’t even remember out first practice. But overall I enjoyed this years experience, it was my last time to perform with my older brother who is in his last year and it was good to be in the group together. Also I managed to be more confident on the stage as we were performing unlike my first year, I was very shy and frightened. But my highlight in the Samoan Group is meeting new people and bonding with them. Laughing together and facing challenges together while learning our 20 minute set. I hope that my remaining years at Tamaki College, I will have the opportunity to join the Samoan Group until year 13 and hopefully become one of the leaders in the group. But this years Polyfest, I was happy to hear the results that our schools Tongan Group came 2nd, with the Niuean Group 3rd as well as our Samoan group coming 2nd in two categories. I am happy to part of a successful group.

Food Technology recipes

Here are some photos myself and my partner Lydia's cooked recipes, multi-color muffins above and macaroni and ham on the right side. Both were delicious but did take time to cook. What I think we did good on is measuring the right ingredients and mixing it well. Also making sure the oven or stove heating is on the right temperature. Next time we cook these two recipes, I hope we could do better by getting things done faster.

Why was a treaty needed?

Today in Social Studies we were to create a diagram of Treaty of Waitangi with the question why was a Treaty needed. Using Lucid-chart, I created my diagram. As you can see I have added facts around the big yellow question to why the treaty was needed. On the top left side of the diagram are 3 columns that represent the tribes and their reasons why they wanted the treaty to be signed. In red, was what they had in common, the same things to why they want to sign the treaty. I have also added in 2 photos that I think is best related to the story.

Let me explain one of the 3 key points to why the treaty was needed to be signed. One of each colour.
Protect the Maori from outside nations: One of the reasons why Maori wanted to sign the treaty so that they can have protection. In 1813, chiefs sent a petition to the British government for protection because they were worried about the outside nations with big armies trying to take over their lands and their tribes.

More access to land, timber, flax fiber, food and water: One of the reasons to why Pakeha wanted to sign the treaty so that they have the rights to have access to the land for new homes to be built, timber to build strong ships and boats, flax fiber to make ropes for boats and ships, and more quantity of food and water. Basically wanting to start a brand new life.

Subdue wars between Pakeha and Maori: Something that both tribes had in mind of signing the treaty was to subdue the wars between their tribes. Wars about settling into someone else's property, having no respect for one another, stealing each others belongings and many other reasons - as well as trading.

Food Technology: Cinnamon Cake with Peach

Yesterday after interval, my class had double period food technology. We were given instructions along with the recipe for what we were cooking. We were cooking cinnamon cake with peach topping! As usual, we had to work in pairs, my partner was Lydia. Personally I found the recipe easy to follow and complete. Once we completed mixing the ingredients, we placed our baking tin with our mixture under the oven for 20 or so minutes. It was heated 180 degrees Celsius. After leaving in the oven for approximately 20 minutes, it was time to take it out. It was perfectly ready for a photo. Above is a photo of our cooked cinnamon cake with peaches on top. What I think my partner and I did good was getting the required amount of flour, sugar, cinnamon and all the ingredients that we needed. But before that we heated the oven to 180 degrees Celsius before we did our mixing. I think Lydia did good mixing the ingredients because the outcome was better than I thought it would. Next time if we were to cook cinnamon cakes again, I want to make it just the way we did yesterday. It was tasty.

Current events: Woman stabbed in Winchester Public library

Topic / Subject of the Story ;
A woman been stabbed by a 25cm hunting knife in Winchester library reading room.
Where is this story based ?

Winchester public library, Washington. USA

(local, regional, national, international )
Why is this story in the news?

A woman was stabbed out of nowhere by a suspect Jeffrey Yao in the public library of Winchester, Washington USA. The woman’s name wasn’t notified. Not only the woman was attacked but also a 77 year old man got stabbed on the arm while he tried to subdue Jeffrey with the help of the other patrons. Jeffrey’s neighbours mentioned that Jeffrey was a dangerous man around their neighbourhood. They have made it clear to the police officers that Jeffrey is dangerous and sometime someone will be killed by this man and now it has happened. Now people of Winchester is finding it hard to attend the public library due to this incident. Thinking that the library was no longer safe especially when they thought it was a safe and peaceful place to spend time.

Eg is it a story of conflict ? Natural disaster ? Interesting or Unusual ? Shocking ? Tragedy ? Controversy ? Humour ? Overcoming ? Victory ? etc    (Give a reason why )
Who are the individuals or groups involved in the story ?
  • Stabbed woman (victim)
  • 77 year old man stabbed on the arm
  • Jeffrey Yao (the suspect)
  • Neighbours of Jeffrey Yao
  • Leslie Luongo (one of the neighbours)
  • Winchester library director Ann Wertanen
Write down 4 facts from the story

  • An unsuspecting woman was stabbed several times but a suspector who also had been violent to his neighbour hood
  • The woman who was stabbed died at the hospital a little while after the attack
  • Jeffrey Yao who was the suspect was described as a quiet, sweet boy while in his high school years. But last two years, his classmates said he was acted strange. He smelt as if he hadn’t had a shower in 6 months straight.
  • Jeffrey Yao used a 25cm hunting knife to attack the woman and 77 year old man.
Describe the issue/conflict in the story?
Around 10:30 am last week Saturday, there was a tragedy in Winchester public library in Washington, USA. An unsuspecting woman was stabbed by a 25cm hunting knife on the head, chest and torso several times. Along with a 77 year old man being stabbed on the arm while trying to subdue the suspecter along with other patrons. It was an unexpected tragedy. The woman who was stabbed died at the hospital a little after the incident - her name wasn’t notified. The suspectors name is Jeffrey Yao. But this is not the only bad news about the victim, Jeffrey’s neighbours has confessed many news about this man frightening their neighbourhood. One of the neighbours confessed that at around 3:00 am, Jeffrey was trying to bust down their front door to get it. He was very violent.  But the big question everyone is asking, why? What caused him to stab someone.
Give two points of views mentioned in the story ?

  • Leslie Luongo, one of suspect’s neighbours said that every morning she would run to her car and leave for work around 5am
  • Another neighbour who told the newspaper to not use his name said that one early morning, someone was trying to smash down their front door and they knew it was Jeffrey Yao.
  • The neighbors had shared their fears with the police officers saying that someone will be killed by Jeffrey and yet it has happened.
What is your opinion on the issue ?

What can people do to help this problem ?

I think that this news is very sad to hear of because people should always feel comfortable and safe to attend public library’s anytime and now something has happened on a public property causing people to have fears of going to such a place which was once peaceful and safe. Also I think that police officers should be more concerned about news that’s been reported to them from people so that things are under control and that these suspects won’t go on further in their free world being violent to other people.

People can help this by making sure that they look out for each other just in case someone is suffering violence and no one knows. Librarians should always keep an eye out on their public visitors to if carrying any weapons inside to harm anyone. Police officers should be aware of the news that are being reported to them.

Around 10:30 am last week Saturday, there was a tragedy in Winchester public library in Washington, USA. An unsuspecting woman was stabbed by a 25 cm hunting knife on the head, chest and torso several times. Along with a 77 year old man being stabbed on the arm while trying to subdue the suspect-er along with other patrons. It was an unexpected tragedy. The woman who was stabbed died at the hospital a little after the incident - her name wasn’t notified. The suspectors name is Jeffrey Yao. But this is not the only bad news about the victim, Jeffrey’s neighbors has confessed many news about this man frightening their neighborhood. One of the neighbors confessed that at around 3:00 am, Jeffrey was trying to bust down their front door to get it. He was very violent.  But the big question everyone is asking, why? What caused him to stab someone.

My perspective on this article of tragedy is about the police officers. It was also mentioned that the neighbors shared their fears about this dangerous man with the police officers. The neighbors warned the police officers that they need to get this man under control because soon someone will be killed and it has now happened. Police officers should be more aware of the news that is reported to them. It will keep the country more safe and happy.
