Students protesting in America

Students sit in silence as they rally in front of the White House in Washington, D.C., March 14, 2018. Student walked out of school to protest gun violence in the biggest demonstration yet of the student activism that has emerged in response to last month's shooting at Florida's Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. There was an article that I read today on Newsela, it was about students in America out on the streets protesting during school hours. Thousands of students protested on gun violence in school ours, a threat to them. They wanted the lawmakers to change the law of gun allowance in schools because it threats them in their classrooms. Although the students were out on the streets protesting during their school hours, I think that they did the right thing for themselves. To open up to the public and the country about what they have in mind about the gun violence in their school grounds. That this law might be affecting their learning. I strongly agree with these students who protested as their social action because  it can be one of the solutions to their problems. The lawmakers should change the law of allowing guns in school grounds because they never know what is going on the minds of the students, that it may be the reason why they aren't doing good in school. Or the reason to why they don't want to attend school but who knows? With the students protesting, I think that they are calling out for help to hear them out.

Coconut Cookies

Today in food technology, our class baked coconut cookies. As always my cooking partner was Lydia. I found today's cooking session easy because we were able to follow the instructions that were written on the board without hesitating to ask the teacher.

I believe that we did good in everything that we did. We managed to finish cooking early. I don't think that we did anything wrong baking the recipe, we mixed the right amount of ingredients and heated the oven on the right temperature. Next time we cook chocolate muffins, I would most likely to do the same thing that we did today. But slightly improving more with our skills and knowledge towards our cooking. I enjoyed cooking coconut cookies.

2018 Polyfest

This year I joined our schools Samoan Group 2018. It’s actually my second year experiencing Polyfest and a lot of comparison has occurred between my first and second years. But it’s a good thing that joined this year’s group, I met new people, especially people from different cultures. It was one of my highlights to see other students from other cultures trying out the Samoan group. Although it was hard to catch on to the language and the actions, I think they did a good job achieving it. As for myself, I was glad to learn new values of my culture as a Samoan. This years experience went by so fast that I can’t even remember out first practice. But overall I enjoyed this years experience, it was my last time to perform with my older brother who is in his last year and it was good to be in the group together. Also I managed to be more confident on the stage as we were performing unlike my first year, I was very shy and frightened. But my highlight in the Samoan Group is meeting new people and bonding with them. Laughing together and facing challenges together while learning our 20 minute set. I hope that my remaining years at Tamaki College, I will have the opportunity to join the Samoan Group until year 13 and hopefully become one of the leaders in the group. But this years Polyfest, I was happy to hear the results that our schools Tongan Group came 2nd, with the Niuean Group 3rd as well as our Samoan group coming 2nd in two categories. I am happy to part of a successful group.

Food Technology recipes

Here are some photos myself and my partner Lydia's cooked recipes, multi-color muffins above and macaroni and ham on the right side. Both were delicious but did take time to cook. What I think we did good on is measuring the right ingredients and mixing it well. Also making sure the oven or stove heating is on the right temperature. Next time we cook these two recipes, I hope we could do better by getting things done faster.

Why was a treaty needed?

Today in Social Studies we were to create a diagram of Treaty of Waitangi with the question why was a Treaty needed. Using Lucid-chart, I created my diagram. As you can see I have added facts around the big yellow question to why the treaty was needed. On the top left side of the diagram are 3 columns that represent the tribes and their reasons why they wanted the treaty to be signed. In red, was what they had in common, the same things to why they want to sign the treaty. I have also added in 2 photos that I think is best related to the story.

Let me explain one of the 3 key points to why the treaty was needed to be signed. One of each colour.
Protect the Maori from outside nations: One of the reasons why Maori wanted to sign the treaty so that they can have protection. In 1813, chiefs sent a petition to the British government for protection because they were worried about the outside nations with big armies trying to take over their lands and their tribes.

More access to land, timber, flax fiber, food and water: One of the reasons to why Pakeha wanted to sign the treaty so that they have the rights to have access to the land for new homes to be built, timber to build strong ships and boats, flax fiber to make ropes for boats and ships, and more quantity of food and water. Basically wanting to start a brand new life.

Subdue wars between Pakeha and Maori: Something that both tribes had in mind of signing the treaty was to subdue the wars between their tribes. Wars about settling into someone else's property, having no respect for one another, stealing each others belongings and many other reasons - as well as trading.
